All You Need To Know About Vaginal Yeast Infection
A yeast infection, also called candidiasis, is a common infection caused by a type of yeast, or fungus, called candida albicans. A vaginal yeast infection will usually occur when the environment is warm and moist for extended periods of time. For example when you wear a wet bathing suit around a theme park in the summer, or lots of tight layers of clothing during the winter. When a yeast infection vaginal, it is known as vulvovaginal candidiasis.
Many things can lead to overgrowth of Candida. Issues such as stress, illness, and pregnancy, which affect your immune system can create the perfect environment for yeast to multiply. In addition, certain medicines can also create this environment. These medicines include some types of birth control pills, antibiotics, and steroids. If you are taking antibiotics, like for strep throat, these antibiotics could kill your "good" bacteria that live in the body and would usually keep the proliferation of candida in your vagina under control. Yeast will also flourish if your blood sugar is high. Women with uncontrolled diabetes are at a higher risk for a vaginal yeast infection.
Lots of women find that they tend to get yeast infections just before they get their periods. This is due to the hormonal changes that are associated with menstruation. Clothing (mainly underwear) that is excessively tight or made from materials such as nylon that trap heat and moisture can trigger vaginal yeast infections in some women. This is because yeast thrives in this type of environment that is moist and warm. In addition, douching and scented sanitary products can also disrupt the balance of bacteria inside of the vagina and make a yeast infection more likely to happen.
Anyone can get a vaginal yeast infection, and they can sometimes be spread between sexual partners. However, this is very rare. The partner of someone with a yeast infection does not usually even need to be treated. Your doctor will not be able to tell you exactly how you got the yeast infection, but they will be able to let you know if you really do have one (and the symptoms aren't due to some other condition). If you do have a yeast infection then they will let you know how to treat it.
Common symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection are:
• an itchy and irritated vagina
• itching, red, and swollen vulva (the folds of skin outside the vagina, also called the “lips”)
• thick discharge that resembles ricotta cottage cheese and may smell like bread or yeast
• pain or burning during urinating or sex
If you are experiencing any of these signs of a vaginal yeast infection, then you should see your doctor. It is easy to mistake the symptoms of a yeast infection with those of some STDs and other vaginal infections. Your doctor will be able to give you a proper diagnosis.
