How To Recognize Yeast Infection Symptoms

Yeast infections are the result of excess bacteria in the vagina. The specific organism responsible for yeast infections is Candida albicans. While it is normally present in the vagina in small numbers with no problems, an environmental change could be the perfect opportunity for them to increase their numbers. This is when you begin to notice yeast infection symptoms like itching, burning, and odor. These “population increases” can be easily controlled with prescription medicines that eliminate Candida, over the counter treatments that restore PH balance, and at home remedies capable of both.

If you think you are experiencing a yeast infection for the first time, then you want to make sure that you visit with a doctor to get an accurate diagnosis. Lots of other conditions (herpes, bacterial vaginosis) can manifest similarly to a yeast infection. Improperly treating them as if they were yeast infections means that they will simply recur. In addition, delaying treatment of these other conditions could lead to negative health side effects.

Getting a “wet mount” performed on a culture taken from your vagina is the only way to know, without doubt, that your symptoms are in fact caused by a yeast infection. In this way, if symptoms should recur, you will immediately recognize them and be able to begin a course of treatment.

So, how do you know that the symptoms you have are in fact yeast infection symptoms? Many people tend to link thick discharge that resembles cottage or ricotta cheese to yeast infections. However, not all women experience this symptom. This discharge, if you have it, can be thick or thin, white, clear, or yellow. The discharge may also have an odor similar to beer or cooking yeast.

Because everyone doesn’t have discharge, the most reliable symptom of a yeast infection is persistent itching around the vagina. You may feel a burning tingle and your vulva could look red and swollen. In addition, going to the bathroom may be painful as the acidic urine touches your irritated skin. Likewise, sex may become painful due to the skin around your vagina being irritated.

These are just the most common yeast infection symptoms, you may experience all of them, or just some of them, every woman is different. However, your yeast infections, if they recur, will usually present in the same way, so that you will be able to identify it by the discharge, smell, or feel of your vagina.

It is important to maintain awareness of your body so that you can catch any imbalance early on and be able to treat it before symptoms get worse. With a recurrent yeast infection, many women can effectively self treat with over the counter medicines or home remedies.
