What Is This White Stuff In My Mouth? Thrush Yeast Infection
A thrush yeast infection occurs when the mouth gets infected with yeast fungus. The term thrush is the description for a temporary infection occurring in the mouths of babies. However, many people also use it to refer to candida infections in the mouths and throats of adults.
What causes thrush?
Candida is naturally occurring in the mouth, it is a digestive aid. However its levels are normally kept balanced by health bacteria called probiotics. Candida is not a problem unless you have too much of it. This happens when the PH of the mouth changes to favor candida, when the mouth becomes more basic.
These changes are often the side effect of using antibiotics. They can also be related to certain conditions like diabetes, malnutrition, and drug abuse. In addition, they can be a consequence of immune weaknesses related to aging or infection. People who have ill fitting dentures may also experience a thrust yeast infection. This is because the dentures can damage the sensitive tissues in the mouth, allowing a space for candida to grow.
You will recognize a thrust yeast infection by the white, cream, or yellow colored patches inside of the mouth. Usually these will not be painful. However, if the patches are scraped off, the area beneath them may bleed. Adults experiencing thrush may also have a burning sensation in the affected areas.
How is thrush diagnosed?
Doctors can usually diagnose thrush in babies on the simple basis of appearance. Sometimes they will scrap a sample from the affected are if they are not sure that this is a thrush yeast infection.
Diagnosis in adults is different. Many disorders, such as early cancer stages, have symptoms similar to thrush, so it is important to run a full check up and get a culture sample. In patients who have immune deficiency disorders, such as AIDS, thrush can be a sign that the main disorder has been aggravated. For these reasons, it is important that thrush be taken seriously and you get proper treatment.
Treating thrush
To treat thrush the root cause must be controlled. This may mean getting better fitting dentures or adjusting diabetic treatments. For others, it may simply mean taking an oral antifungal treatment. Typically, doctors will prescribe medicated mouthwash and lozenges.
Thrush can cause your mouth to feel very sensitive. You can use a soft toothbrush to keep up with your regular oral hygiene habits. Many people find that it helps to rinse their mouth out with a diluted mixture of hydrogen peroxide.
If the root cause of your thrush can be put under control your thrush yeast infection will likely be gone after a few treatments with an oral fungicide.
