Severe Yeast Infection: What Is It?
Yeast infections begin when a fungus called Canidida albicans, which is naturally found inside of the vagina, increases. One cause of this population growth is when your vagina has been too warm or moist for an extended period of time. Conditions causing this can include: wearing clothing that is too tight, wearing a wet bathing suit for too long, and wearing underwear made from synthetic materials. In addition, health conditions like pregnancy, obesity, and diabetes can also lead to yeast infections. Symptoms of a yeast infection can be annoying but are fairly easily treated with a prescription or at-home remedy.
A healthy woman will feel only mildly uncomfortable with a yeast infection. Usually over the counter treatments will alleviate symptoms and she can expect to recover in a week’s time. For people with a weakened immune system, caused by certain health conditions such as diabetes, autoimmune deficiency disorder, or the use of antibiotics such as amoxicillin, an ordinary yeast infection can easily become a severe yeast infection. This experience is often much worse than a typical infection, with patients experiencing much more intense pain and exaggerated symptoms.
Severe yeast infections can happen whenever your immune system is not strong enough to fight an infection. This means it will take longer to clear up, a week or two, instead of a few days. In addition, your yeast infection could reccur after it has seemingly cleared up. Ordinarily annoying symptoms become painful and agonizing to patients with a weak immune system who are experiencing a severe yeast infection.
Most women are able to identify the symptoms of a yeast infection quite easily. The symptoms of a severe yeast infection are no different, except they are much more intense. There is almost certainly going to be an accompanying discharge and it is usually quite thick with some coloration. This discharge will have a strong and unpleasant odor resembling that of beer. In addition, there will be intense burning and itching of the vagina and vulva. These areas will likely be visibly swollen and red. Even a gentle touch could trigger sever pain for the woman.
Treatment Options
If you have a severe yeast infection, at-home remedies probably will not be strong enough, though some, like yogurt, can provide temporary relief. Women with a severe yeast infection are usually placed on a prescription medication treatment plan. Some doctors are hesitant to put their patients on prescriptions because these antibiotics can further weaken the patient’s immune system, making the environment even more suitable for bacterial growth. In addition, because severe yeast infections are usually recurrent, there is a chance that the patient’s body could develop immunity to the drug. Many times a doctor will switch the patient between prescription and over the counter medications to control each yeast infection.
