Monistat Yeast Infection Treatment
Yeast infections happen when fungus reproduces and builds up in the vagina, creating an unhealthy imbalance. This imbalance causes women to experience the symptoms of yeast infection which include itching, burning, odor, and discharge. There are many ways to treat a yeast infection, one of the most popular methods being the over the counter drug called Monistat. Monistat yeast infection treatment is available without a prescription at your local pharmacy or general store.
Monistat yeast infection treatment is the brand name for the drug miconazole. It is a topical anti-fungal agent that is often used to treat skin problems. This treatment operates by stopping the growth of fungus. This same drug is also used to treat other fungal disorders such as ringworm and athlete’s foot.
Monistat is available in a number of prescription strengths. A higher prescription means you will only need to use the drug for a short amount of time. However, it is recommended that you choose the standard seven day Monistat. This dose is strong enough to kill the fungus, but not so strong that it also kills the good bacteria, making your infection worse. Monistat should be applied within the vagina, at the heart of the infection so to speak. Men suffering from a yeast infection can also use Monistat, they simply place it on the penis where symptoms occur.
As with any other drug, Monistat does have risks associated with it. If you take the oral version of Monistat, then there is a small possibility that the medicine will be absorbed in your digestive tract. There is also a chance of this happening when it is applied vaginally.
Monistat has been known to interact with other drugs you are taking. For this reason, you should speak with your doctor before you begin a treatment regimen, and discuss possible drug interactions. If you are pregnant, then it is not advisable that you treat a yeast infection on your own, always consult a doctor before you begin to take any new medicines.
When you are deciding to treat a yeast infection you have many options. Some women prefer to use natural remedies such as yogurt or garlic insertions. Treatments like these promote the growth of good bacteria. However, they do not kill the unwanted bacteria that cause the yeast infection. Other women favor over the counter treatments such as Monistat. As discussed, this medicine prevents the yeast infection causing bacteria from reproducing. Still other women prefer prescription methods to alleviate their symptoms and get rid of their yeast infection.
Before beginning use of Monistat or any treatment regimen, you should talk with your physician, or conduct some thorough research on treatment options.
