Exploring Causes Of A Yeast Infection

If this is your first experience with a yeast infection or you have been struggling with repeated yeast infection then you are probably wondering about some of the causes of a yeast infection. Whether you have itching or burning from an oral, skin, vaginal, or penile yeast infection, the primary cause is typically one and the same. In this article, we’ll discuss some of the common causes of a yeast infection.

A yeast infection is caused by candida albicans. This is a type of yeast fungus occurring naturally inside the body. It can be found in the mouth, digestive tract, and stomach and it has an important function in the digestive process. This fungus is used by your body to process essential nutrients; in the right amounts it is actually very important.

However, when the candida albicans population becomes more than the other “good bacteria” in your system you will begin to have problems. So what causes an overgrowth of candida albicans?

As with anything else that grows, it needs certain conditions. Candida favors sugary environments, so people with high blood sugar content due to sugars in the diet, or diabetes, have a more favorable environment that allows it to flourish. But that’s not all. A weak immune system also contributes to candida overgrowths because your body is not able to fight back. This allows the candida to get out of control.

Common Causes of Yeast Infections Explained:

Sugar: Having a lot of sugar and yeast in your system is unhealthy and will lead to high candida levels. As yeast combines with sugar it is able to multiply more quickly. When a person has high blood sugar levels they have an increased risk of developing a candida yeast infection. While this is a known issue for diabetics, you may be pre-diabetic and unaware of it if you are having issues with recurring yeast.

Antibiotics: When you are prescribed antibiotics to get rid of a viral infection, your medicine works by killing all bacteria, this includes the bad and good bacteria. This is great because you do not want the 'bad' bacteria around. However, killing 'good' bacteria' can have negative effects. This bacteria keeps yeast levels in your body under control. Without them, yeast levels increase and you will be at greater risk for a yeast infection.

Unprotected Sex: Engaging in unprotected sex with your partner while they have an active vaginal or penile yeast infection means that you are likely to contract one too. It is recommended that partners utilize protection until after the infection is certain to have cleared up – usually this requires a few weeks. Research has shown that uncircumcised men are at a higher risk of contracting a yeast infection from a female partner with excessive vaginal yeast.

If you have a yeast infection, there are a number of ways to treat it, including natural at-home remedies, over the counter treatments, and prescription medicines from your doctor. You should do some research to find the best methods for you.
